Mission
Followers of Jesus Christ are to be a people on a mission. In some of His final words to His disciples before He ascended into heaven Jesus Himself said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
At Fellowship our reason for existing as a church is to be faithful to this missional call of Jesus Christ by:
Cultivating an authentic Christian community committed to making followers of Jesus Christ through the proclamation and demonstration of God’s love.
Each word of this statement is significant, because it defines who we are, what we do, and what we are seeking to accomplish as a church:
Cultivate: The Church exists because God wills it to; a church is something God builds; it does not come about by human effort. A farmer must tend to his crops, but he cannot make them grow. In a similar manner, the responsibility of church leaders is to create an atmosphere for growth, where those under their leadership receive compassionate care and spiritual nourishment. But it is the working of God that brings about growth in and through this environment.
Authentic: We live in a society where too often we are told we have to put on a front, to have it all together. We desire to be a church where you can come and take those masks off. We believe that much of the true joy in life is found through laughing, weeping, and rejoicing over life’s victories and defeats as we walk with each other on the journey.
Christian: Being a Christian (with a capital C) community involves being centered around the foundational doctrines of our ancient faith. We believe in Trinitarian God who pursues relationship with ruined sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and Who then calls us to follow Him through His Spirit.
Community: Human beings are not designed for isolation because we are created in the image of a relational God. All human beings have a deep need for community. We need each other to heal, grow, and celebrate life in relationship with God. We cannot begin to become authentically human apart from Christ or one another.
Followers of Christ: Becoming a follower of Christ is far more than simply mentally assenting to the facts surrounding His life, it is a radical restructuring of one’s life with Him at the center. As a community of followers we seek, through God working in us, to emulate more and more the model of Christ.
Proclamation: Before something can be embraced and understood, it must be communicated and explained. The message of the Gospel is God’s vehicle for transforming lives and bringing individuals into relationship with Himself. Our church is called to engage the culture with the message of life and hope found in Jesus Christ.
Demonstration: A watching world does not want to hear empty words from the followers of Jesus Christ. They want to see that the message we proclaim is true, that there is a supernatural God at work to bring about real change in our lives. We desire to be a church that demonstrates the love of God through our actions, in tangible ways, so that through us, others can see Him.
